When my little sister, Hanna, came home raving about an acai bowl food truck in Uptown Charlotte, I was thoroughly confused. What in the world is acai? And why has my little sister been driving all around the city trying to eat food from a TRUCK?
One day after church (after begging for us to take her back) my sister convinced my parents and I to try Rico’s Acai for the first time. Oh man. After that one experience, I was hooked! Acai berries come from South America, and are frozen then blended into a slushy-type mixture that serves as the base for the bowls. The bowls are then filled to the brim with layered fruit, granola, and your choice of topping: coconut, Nutella, peanut butter (my fave), almond butter, and different types of nuts.
The bowl comes in two sizes: small and large. If you’re hungry, definitely get the large, because this is such a light meal replacement option. Acai berries are an excellent way to get a super dose of antioxidants.
Rico’s Acai is currently located at: 510 South College Street. There is only one food truck in operation at the time of this posting, however, the company is planning on adding two new locations, at South End and Seventh Street Public Market. I can’t wait until they expand because I’ve been obsessed with Rico’s Acai ever since my first trip!
Tip: If you’re in a hurry, be sure to call in your order ahead of time. There is ALWAYS a line at Ricos, and since it is made with fresh ingredients, allow fifteen minutes to finish your bowl. The number, address, and more information about Rico’s Acai can be found on their Facebook page HERE.
If you’ve been to Rico’s Acai before, let me know what your favorite bowl is, and what you thought about it in the comments!
