I have taken my time reading this book, because it’s honestly been wrecking my world. Jennie Allen’s refreshing honesty and beautiful writing is interspersed with nuggets of Biblical truth and insight. Nothing to Prove tackles relevant themes (striving, perfectionism, busyness) without sounding preachy. I found myself underlining passages, highlighting them, and journaling about the truths she expresses. It is rare to find a Christian Living book that is challenging, relevant, and fun to read. Nothing to Prove perfectly fits this mold.
At the end of the main chapters, there are questions for reflection and discussion. These are especially helpful if reading this book as in a book club or Bible study. I found that journaling some of these questions added to the reading experience. There are four introductory chapters, and then several meaty chapters focusing on a specific trait or action. These main chapters begin with a re-telling of a Bible story found in John. I enjoyed reading about these stories from a first person perspective. None of the stories were exaggerated or false, so it did not come across as sacrilegious.
I cannot recommend this book enough. I will definitely be putting it on my “Must Read” recommendations list in the future! I’m glad that I did not rush through the reading experience, because the entire book is meant to be absorbed slowly. You should definitely check it out for yourself!
