I’m officially obsessed with the cute new coffee shop in Matthews, Brakeman’s! I was honestly skeptical at first bxecause I am very loyal to Rush Espresso (my favorite coffee shop in Ballantyne). Also, I wasn’t a fan of Dilworth Coffee that closed in Matthews last year. But when i kept seeing the hype about Brakeman’s on social media & a friend told me how incredible it was, I knew I needed to venture there. So after I finished tutoring one of my students, I headed over to see what the fuss was about. And DANG I was not disappointed!
The coffee shop is in an old, renovated house. When you walk in from the back, the first thing you notice is a patio seating area shaded by large trees and string lights for entertaining at night. Obsessed.
But inside is magical. I love the exposed brick, wooden tables, mosaic tiled floors, and cozy rooms converted into seating areas with plenty of natural light. It’s spacious without losing its charm, popular but not overly crowded, and family friendly. There’s even a little kids room with toys!
I was really happy with my iced latte as well. Not too strong, and just a little sweet, it was perfect to beat the 100 degree heat. They also boast a few pastries, and the gluten free oat bar made the perfect lunch. It reminded me of peanut butter and jelly.
Needless to say, I’ll definitely be coming back. I’m so happy I gave it a chance. This little local coffee shop has helped save Matthews from a major coffee drought, and I think I speak for everyone who has visited when I say: THANK YOU.
pro tip: park around back by making a left at the light just past the shop. It makes parking easier because it can get a little cramped in the small, gravel lot!
