This weekend, my family and I piled in the car to see my sister who is in college in Birmingham, Alabama. To be honest, Birmingham freaks me out a little bit. Everyone is really sugary sweet, the men open the doors everywhere, and little kids run around saying “yes ma’am and no sir.” Basically, it’s the epitome of the American South, and much to my family’s dismay, I feel a lot more at home where people are either rude or completely ignore you as a human being. (Hello NEW YORK)
****note there is nothing wrong with southerners. i love them, just not their manners. also, i am a southerner. i know this.
BUT if there’s anything southerners know how to do, it’s cook. (Seriously, you should see my Thanksgiving-it’s impressive. My best friend came last year and almost had a heart attack at the amount of delicious carbs we devoured.)
So while in Birmingham, we went to a variety of very delicious restaurants. My foodie heart was so happy that I decided to share them with you. If you ever find yourself in Bham, try to find one of these local hotspots! I promise they won’t disappoint.
Steel City Pops
Two words: life changing. These popsicles have magical powers. They are creamy and delicious and now you can choose to dip them in chocolate, have them drizzled in chocolate, and dusted with a topping of your choice! If you’re in Birmingham for all of 5 minutes please stop here.
This place was so worth the wait! A classic breakfast joint with multiple twists-oatmeal pancakes! purple grits! There’s plenty of gf yummies here for those of us with limited diets. (And all God’s people said ‘Amen’
Real and Rosemary
This healthy hotspot looks just like something Joanna Gaines would have decorated. It’s gorgeous inside! The food is spectacular-a seasonal menu offering local fresh goods and classic southern veggies. Also, there’s marble tables so it’s definitely instagrammable.
O Henry’s Coffee
Hands down one of my favorite coffee joints. This place uses Ghirardelli chocolate so everything is super smooth and tastes like dessert. I also tried something healthy this time, and got their Acai-Pomegranate-Blueberry smoothie and it was DELICIOUS!
We tried this restaurant on a whim. We needed somewhere fancy to celebrate my dad’s birthday dinner, and this place got good reviews on Trip Advisor (even though my sis had never even heard of it) so we checked it out. OH MY WORD y’all this food was so good. From the pommes frites appetizer (mouthwatering) to the shrimp risotto, I was so happy. And my family ordered steak which was perfect. Then the dessert-apple cinnamon cheesecake !!! Go here.
The local college “it” spot we had to check out! These tacos are so dang good. With a build-your-own option, everyone is happy. Also, my dad who hates Mexican food decided that he loved that place-this alone should convince you it’s worth a stop. Unfortunately I don’t have any pictures from here because it was so dark.
